Nome, Alaska – Norton Sound Health Corporation identified seven positive COVID-19 cases on Thursday, September 9. One of the new cases is in Unalakleet, two are in Koyuk, one is in Savoonga, two are in Shaktoolik, and one is in Brevig Mission. Patients have been notified and are safely isolating.
There are currently 39 active cases in the region: 11 are in Unalakleet, four are in Nome, five are in Stebbins, three are in St. Michael, five are in Koyuk, five are in Shaktoolik, three are in Savoonga, one is in Brevig, and two are in Elim. Village leadership in all communities has been notified.
Due to a national shortage of rapid COVID-19 tests, NSHC has had to scale back its rapid testing. COVID-19 test results will now be available within 24 hours, but when traveling, it is important to note that same-day results may not be available. Please inform the testing center or clinic when you get tested if you are traveling within 24 hours.
NSHC recommends always wearing a face mask while indoors, including at the airport and in airplanes. Travelers should quarantine in their final destination and avoid visiting outside their homes until they receive negative results. If people feel ill, NSHC urges them to stay home and contact their local clinic to get tested. In Nome, the Cough and Cold Clinic is available for testing every day. It is located on the first floor of the hospital and is open to walk-ins from 8 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday-Friday and 10 a.m.-10 p.m. on weekends. You can call the direct line to the clinic at (907) 443-3231.
